EMMANUEL NKURANGA
CO-FOUNDER INEMA ART CENTER

BIOGRAPHY

EMMANUEL NKURANGA is a self‐taught painter and a mixed‐media expressionist. He is co-founder and owner of Inema Arts Center in Kigali, Rwanda. Through Inema, Nkuranga leads the country’s growing creative industry.

After completing a High Diploma in Computer Studies (bachelors equivalent) at the Kigali Institute for Science and Technology in 2009, Nkuranga found a passion for art.

In 2012, Nkuranga co-founded the Inema Arts Center with his brother and fellow painter, Innocent Nkurunziza. Inema is the largest art center in the country and provides space for 14 artists in-residence to explore their creative talent and showcase their work.

Inema is also home to programmes, projects, and initiatives to turn creativity into livelihood. Today, Inema provides livelihoods for nearly 100 people and hosts over 7,000 visitors annually.

After developing his own artistic talent, Nkuranga looked to start a movement of art in a country with little value, at the time, in creativity.

A single orphan himself, in 2010, Nkuranga founded Art with a Mission. The programme unlocks orphans hidden artistic talent. Proceeds of the artwork produced by the young artists support their livelihood and school fees. The programme today supports over 60 youth.

Nkuranga’s work is shown around the world, from Japan to Germany, from Nike Graphic Studio in Portland, OR to the Charlie Dutton Gallery in the UK.

He has been an artist in residence and guest lecturer in undergraduate and graduate courses at Michigan State University, University of Virginia, and Scranton University.

In 2015 Nkuranga was hosted by the Swedish Government to bring art to refugees throughout Sweden.

As the leading source of visual art in Rwanda, Inema and Nkuranga have been featured in The New York Times, Vogue, CNN, WIRED, and National Geographic.
